This morning my twitter feed was full of journalists reporting on yet another newspaper deciding to take a chance on getting a paywall to work for them after years of giving the content away for free. @stevebuttry Newspapers pursuing paywalls: Chapter Whatever. http://p2.to/Tcb The brave dinosaurs are running one by one to the comet to see if it will help them survive. Their online business model is not changing, even though time after time news organizations have tried to put up a paywall and have failed. Nicole Bogas aid this week in a post this week, that the news industry has still not yet adjusted to an over-saturation information market. In fact, they hardly even recognize that it is the catalyst behind it all. @nicolebogdas Media misperception: Biggest change is from analog to digital.http://bit.ly/9P6XcX We can keep betting on the paywall, a system that has been proven not to be the savior some have hoped for, or we can start working together to come up with solutions that move online news into a different future. I am starting a hashtag on Twitter, #news20, for forward thinking journalists, business experts, web developers and everyone in between to discuss how we can start to build better news start-ups. It is my firm belief that it will be incredibly difficult for mainstream media to make the cultural and business changes they need to create a thriving online business. I think that real innovation will come from small start-ups. Start-ups will be able to create new news platforms, applications and strategies that are too risky for established media. The journalism industry has yet to find their own digital creative like Sergey Brin, Larry Page or Evan Williams that can help create a platform that moves us all forward. It’s time to forget about paywalls. It is time to be more creative. Let’s talk about new ideas rather than suggest the same ones as if they are our only options. It’s time to start news companies who are native to the web not just adaptation of offline models. It’s time to start talking about news that does not need a paper or broadcast station to exist. It’s time to start thinking about news post-Gutenberg. #News20.

Some proposals for #news20 Glenn, As one who has loved newspapers for decades, it pains me to see how insistent the industry is on this self-destructive course of paywalls. As a leader of a digital news operation that's independent of the newspaper business, I say bring the paywalls on. I have proposed ways for news organizations to pursue new business models: My Blueprint for the Complete Community Connection: http://bit.ly/qzsKx and mobile-first strategy: http://bit.ly/6WnABX |

Bring it on Steve, I love how you are not afraid to tell the newspapers to chase the comet. Sooner or later the bad business models will fade and will be replaced by ones that have better adapted to their new environment. I am re-reading your two links you posted. There are so many good ideas packed into each post. I am so excited to see that there are journalists out there who want to run the other direction. It is so nice to find people with vision. We need people like you to help us find a place for journalism in an online and mobile world outside of shovelware. Your two links are amazing starting points for all of us. |

CTO The future business model of any industry is how it's products and services can be effectively delivered to it's consumers. It's amazing to me though how much we relate to nations, governments, industries and companies as individual people. These entities are just a way of organizing a delivery system in which suppliers are convinced to provide for or protect the wants or needs of its consumers. Yes, our government is there to protect us, but it's clearly not Obama's fault if and when government fails. So take the media business. We are most concerned about how the media companies (viewed as some mythical person) can change or survive in a world in which people are consuming news and entertainment in new ways. But why do we care about their future. Instead, we need focus on how the people who produce media can be convinced and/or compensated to use the new delivery systems. Traditionally media companies hired the media producers and paid them under long term "contracts" funded by payments from their employer's customers. The employer also provided other such benefits as training and health care, but most importantly, they employed sales people and tactics to attract and keep paying subscribers or advertisers. In the Internet age, customers, ie consumers of media, are so plentiful that it often seems that sales efforts aren't necessary. Independant bloggers are thrilled to have thousands of readers, but are they getting paid for the services they are providing. Google seems to be the only game in town for providing web site produces some degree of compensation. The future business model for the media industry needs to focus on how the people who produce media get paid in a manner that enable them to focus on their craft and not on the business of collecting fees. |
